And the little tractor has sprung an oil leak... It’s not super bad, but it is like a quart every 15-20 minutes :-\. I put some UV dye in the engine oil and It’s coming out from behind the hydraulic pump. Because of the location I cannot tell if it’s from the pump drive take-off or the timing cover :P. My current plan is to replace the O-ring that seals the pump to the drive housing and while the pump is out of the way, crank down the bolts on the timing cover. Actually replacing the timing cover gasket requires pulling the fan, radiator and injection pump. I really hope it’s the hydraulic pump O-ring....
After degreasing, half disassembled...
I can put the snow blower on the Zetor if I have to, but it will be a PITA to reach all the tight spots I typically clear with it. Also the Zetor has the bale grabber on it’s loader right now and it’s bucket is buried under the snow somewhere so I can’t use it to push back the big piles either...
Almost back together... Those hard hydraulic pipes suck.
Got the new O-rings in...
Now that all the filth is off I can see clearly....
Bad news: it’s the timing cover gasket. Fuck.
Fuckity fuck.

The 99.5 golf (MK4) has a oil cooler so it goes, Iron block, o-ring, cooler, oil filter. A couple years back it got super cold 0f and the the oring just split. I took it out and it was like solid plastic due to age and it couldn’t handle the expansion. You know VW knows it is a problem part when you can walk in and they have 20 of that item in stock. Same goes for the coolant sensor, one of the water manifolds, window guides . . .

Your definition of not super bad is suspect.

A quart every 15-20 minutes isn’t much when you measure the oil capacity in 55 gallon drums.

Yeah, it's an engine oil leak, not a hydraulic leak. That engine actually only takes 6 quarts... Which is a lot for an engine with a 1.5l displacement, but it's not really that much.. :-\

I mean it’s a dribble, not a spurt... It’s bad enough to be a real problem, but not like a “suddenly all my oil is on the ground and now the engine is running dry” problem. Which would be "super bad". This just rates as "pretty bad".

Yeah, sadly it turns out it's the timing cover gasket that's leaking. You have pull the radiator, water pump/fan, hydraulic pump and injection pump to replace that gasket :-(

I mean, you could switch to the other tractor and punt this to better weather when you have the time, or you could change the gasket if you have one handy. Choose your PITA, I guess. At least it’s not like you had plenty of other work to do, right?

Yeah, The real issue is that replacing the timing cover gasket requires pulling the fan and crank-pulley, pulling the front main seal, removing the governor section from the injection pump, pulling the power steering pump (and to facilitate getting all of these off removing the radiator and front clip too)... I may try the ‘ol “smear the leak area with JB WELD and cross my fingers” fix.

Can you identify a discrete leak spot over the whole thing without getting in there?
There’s this stuff called blue devil oil stop that you add to stop timing cover gasket leaks. I wonder if it’s any good. It’s only $20. I have no idea if it’s snake oil, but if it works even a little, it could buy you the time you need. Lucas oil also makes a stop leak additive that has good reviews on Amazon.
